Today I am going to talk about how I used to be an agony aunt for friends, family, or even for people I didn't know.
I guess it mainly started because I am a good listener. Some people really like to talk about themselves; and that sounds bad, but it is true! Especially women. We sure do love a good chin-wag.
So because people spoke, I let them say what they wanted to say. I never judged, I only gave my advice when I got asked to give it.
For example, if someone was like "Hey, Katie. I need some guy advice [enter situation] So what do you suggest I do". Because I got asked, I would help by giving what I would think is the best advice, and word it in a way that would be helpful. I try to put myself in their shoes, and pick the most sensible thing to do.
I am one of those people that likes to spread positivity whenever I can, however, I don't like to give hopeful advice and put them in good spirits when there can be a down side.
I just think if we all were expecting the unexpected, then it wouldn't matter if it were good or bad news, because we didn't prepare for either.
I know obviously it's nice to be hopeful at the same time, but if we hold those hopes too high, then when it doesn't go our way, we end up getting crushed.
An example would be for a new job that we have applied for. It would be amazing if we got it, but if we think positive like it's all "in the bag" then if we get declined, we end up feeling depressed.
The easiest thing (as hard as it may be) would be to forget about it and carry on with our lives.
That is honestly what I do, and I think it's the best solution.
Too many a time have I held my hopes so high it takes over my thoughts, and then I get let down. So much that I feel like saying "why do I bother?".
If we surround ourselves with the people we love and the things that make us feel better, then we have that safety net when things go down. There are good people out there. Even if you feel you have no one.
Personally, I don't have a lot of friends. I never have. I would be what you'd call a loner.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy being alone. It's why reading is a hobby that suits me as it's an individual activity.
I think it's also because I know when I'm on my own no one can attack or hurt me. But it is OK to let people in, what is what I have done lately. I sort of balance it a bit. I keep to myself, and then I socialise with the people I can trust.
I enjoyed listening to people, dishing out advice and then seeing the smiles on their faces. When you talk to someone good, it makes you feel better. I know sometimes we have to be in the right mood to do so, and that's OK. I have my light and dark moments too.
But honestly, it does make you feel better; knowing that you've helped someone.
Keeping problems inside really isn't the best thing, which is why I have a diary. A place where I can write down my secrets and share my ups and downs. When I get it off my chest, it's like one of the best things ever. I'd like to think of it as a Pensieve from Harry Potter; where you put your memories and thoughts in to come back to later.
I honestly strongly recommend you start a diary if you haven't done already. It can help you to remember dates, times and can also help to sort decisions out inn your head.
So to sum up: talk to people if you have problems; help those around you who need someone to talk to, and if you need help yourself, you can always keep a diary (make sure you hide it in a safe place for personal security).
